Humor and Hubris

Me.

(some) Others.

And on a serious note: yet another amazing article. On one of my favorite books on describing a heaven, The Lovely Bones, yet really about the aftermath of a rape, turned upside down, showing how our beliefs in what happened can be manufactured. The author's memoir on her assault was a major tilting point to vacating the conviction. The toll taken.

Topics That Tempt

What does a review on two books about the history and use of cars have in common with topics of interest?

The Answer: Cars, yes, and homes and guns.

Cars and single homes have often been the topic of debates on our Friday rides.

Guns like cars? Interesting point. One person's freedom is another's problem.

It's tempting to think we know best, but it's best to tempt our thinking to know better.

Just Saying

I have a thing about women's magazines. I grew up thinking women's magazines had the answers....and found that they didn't because there weren't men's magazines with men contemplating marriage dynamics with the idea of men learning and understanding what women thought. It was all one-sided: what women could do to make the marriage better (i.e. what women could do to make men's lives easier.)

So, the question is, is this some of the same old same old, or is it honest and possible and plausible?

Just asking.

A Big Gate

I was intrigued by an NYT oped yesterday on immigration.

Knowing I can be persuaded (sometimes easily), I decided to ask another person, a young person who will be living in this world we've created while tweaking (and fixing) it.

Not surprisingly, they had a different take on the article. I asked for clarity, they responded with some excellent counter-points.

Now I have to have my own conversation, taking in the article and their thoughts.

Makes Me Think

No man treats a motorcar as foolishly as he treats another human being. When the car will not go, he does not attribute its annoying behavior to sin; he does not say, "You are a wicked motorcar, and I shall not give you any more petrol until you go." He attempts to find out what is wrong and to set it right. An analogous way of treating human beings is, however, considered to be contrary to the truths of our holy religion. -Bertrand Russell, philosopher, mathematician, author, Nobel laureate (18 May 1872-1970)

A Moment That Wasn't

Festival season has begun! Of course, the music was wonderful, the weather great and my tent living perfect. Life connections in a moment?

Well, technically, it wasn't. A moment.

One band had a woman with a washboard playing with gloves with medal buttons on them that reminded me of either tap dancing or participating in a drumline. I loved it and decided to send a clip to a young person who is a percussionist. All good there, but...

it came back wrong number. Thinking of the anonymous person seeing the video made my day, so I sent a reply. It tickled me to think someone I didn't know got to see it.

Really, come to find out, my person just didn't recognize my name.

Hence the moment that wasn't.

A couple extra photos.

Nature at its finest, and not.

Billed as the Doors and the Rolling Stones in one, the band was amazing. Viewing it from the side, I danced the whole set, and I had the sore knee the next day to prove it.

I'm Not a Teacher

Pleasure found: read immediately.

Just a sub -

not denigrating my job

but, knowing what teachers do

"I'm just a sub," I say.

Some days working the library

(Better said, being with books)

I remember.

Remember

the thrill of thinking

creating a new unit.

Children's books

       poetry posters from photos

Book reviews:

                       in paragraph and poetry posters.

Always writing but not an

("Aw, do we have to?")

essay.

I remember what I did

and (only sometimes)

wish for it again.

A gift for another day.
